Ashes to Ashes by Karina Halle

amazon
I have been waiting for this book FOREVER. What is weird is that as soon it was available I didn't read it. I was busy falling in love with some super sweet book boyfriends like Hutch from Vicki Green or Riley from Ann Vaughn.  A part of me didn't want to read it because I can't come to terms that the series is coming to an end. I love the Experiment in Terror Series by Karina Halle. Ashes to Ashes in #8 in this series. Have I not mentioned how much I love Dex & Perry? You may have noticed I have a banner on my blog that says "Team Derry" hehehhehe. OK, back to business. Dex & Perry are on to another adventure together for their internet show "Experiment in Terror." In the 8 months they have known each other it seems like they have known each other for a lifetime. They have been through it ALL. Now, just when the dust has settled and things seem to be "normal"-well as normal as it can get for them-they are faced with some new hurdles.

This series is like romance meets the X Files. You just love to hate and hate to love Dex. I'm sure I have said that before. He is just too much and you love every second of it. I'm so sad that this series will end soon. Literally, I have reread this series 3 times! I will be rereading Ashes to Ashes too. I feel like the first time you read the book you have so much anxiety that you just want to know what happens. The second time you read it you can savor every word. This book kind of reminds me a tiny bit of Silent Hill. Particularly the creepy nurses.

I do have a dream cast for Dex and Perry.

Here are some of my favorite quotes:
  • ...it's such a non-issue that it's become an issue.
  • And an anchor was a hell of a lot sexier than getting a big ass boulder tatted on you.
  • ...I'd had verbal diarrhea of the lovey-dovey kind.
  • ..."But we can handle it. And if we can't, well that's what Jack Daniels is for."
  • "Who's the boss in the bedroom here? Tony Danza?" (LOL!)
  •  "Sometimes I think I'm looking at a ghost but it turns out to be a meth head."
  • "You know you can have pie any time you want," I teased him.
  • "You think you'd be used to fog, coming from jolly fucking England and all," Dex said.
  • "Don't even think about a quickie," I warned him with a sharp shake of my head. "I couldn't come in this place even if you had two dicks." (gasp in feigned horror)
  • "I mean, hello, way to welcome him into your hidey hole so soon." (LMAO)
  • "Perry, there's something that's been weighing on me...promise you won't get mad." My eyes widened defensively. "If you're starting something off like that, I can probably promise I will get mad." (HECK YEAH!!!)
  • I was like the highly sought after call girl of the supernatural.

Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle

Hi guys! If you have been to my blog before you know I LOVE me some Karina Halle. Her Experiment in Terror series is one of my favorite series ever! Here is some information on a new book scheduled to come out early next year! Can't wait!

Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle
Publication date: January 2014
Genres: Horror, Romance

Synopsis:

Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive

The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw.

What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.

Bold Tricks by Karina Halle

I just finished Karina Halle's Bold Tricks. It is the last book in the Artists Trilogy. What an exciting book! Can I just say how much I love Camden McQueen!?! He is such a stand up guy! This series would make a great movie. Action packed and always keeps you on your toes. Bad guys that you love to hate or hate to love? Camden is so a book boyfriend and what the heck so is Javier! I love pretty much anything that Karina Halle writes and each series is different. It is not limited to one genre. BUT, I will say, I did find a few moments where Camden reminded me of Dex for just a minute. Which is always a good thing! Since I love Dex from her other series, Experiment in Terror. Pretty much the only time I was reminded of Dex was when Camden and Ellie were talking about "needing a fix" and what fix really means. We all know how much Dex loved talking about the D. Do yourself a favor and read this series. It is a great, fast paced, action packed story full of awesomeness!
Book 1- Sins and Needles
Book 1.5- On Every Street
Book 2- Shooting Scars
Book 3- On Every Street

I will say I have not read On Every Street yet. It is from when Ellie was with Javier and at the time I was not ready to love him that much yet. Will be reading that next though!

This would be my Camden...

Shooting Scars by Karina Halle

I just finished Shooting Scars by Karina Halle. This is the second book in the Artists Trilogy series. Wow! Talk about leaving you with a cliffhanger! So many questions? Is Gus Ellie's father? Will she and Camden stay together? Will Javier die? I have not read the short story On Every Street. That is a novella from Ellie and Javier's past. I have to say with the first book I was like no way would I like Javier. BUT, in this book, I kind of rooted for him for a few minutes. Then I snapped back to reality and went Team Camden all the way! Another great book by one of my favorite authors!

Sins & Needles by Karina Halle

Over the weekend I read Sins & Needles by Karina Halle. She is one of my all time favorite authors. If you have even peeked at my blog you most likely have seen a post regarding the Experiment in Terror (EIT) Series. Actually, I was hesitant about starting this series by her. I love Dex and Perry, Derry LOL, so much that I did not know if I could make room in my heart for another couple. Thankfully, this story is totally different than EIT. I really enjoyed Sins & Needles. The only down side???? I thought the next book was out already but it isn't. You know how impatient I am when it comes to waiting for books. :) OK, back to the book. It is about Ellie, Camden and Javier. They have issues. Major issues. Like soap opera, mob boss, criminal action issues. It was awesome!  At times I was practically yelling at the computer screen (yeah, I was reading it on the computer lol) telling Ellie "Don't do it!" The story keeps you going. Of course I was rooting for Camden but at times I was not sure if that was a good thing or not.  Camden makes the book boyfriend list. Javier should really make the list too but I have a hard time putting him there because he is threatening my happiness! hehhehe  Maybe with Shooting Scars he will make the book boyfriend list or On Every Street.

COME ALIVE by Karina Halle

Five hours and I'm done with Come Alive. I have been waiting for this book for MONTHS! I love Dex & Perry. I just cant help it. It is pretty obvious since I have written 8+ blog entries about this awesome series! I love this series so much that my bookclub is reading Dark House as June's selection. This will be spoiler free I promise! I totally fell in love with Dex again and boy did he piss me off at times. I was so mad! I keep getting more and more impressed with Perry. She is smart enough to see through some of the BS. And Maximus, wow, he really pisses me off too. "Cock blocking" doesn't even describe it. Even after the ending and we can understand him a bit better, I'm still angry with him lol. Sometimes, when I get an impression of certain characters, it just sticks with me. Like Marcus in Because of Low. Anywho, there are so many great quotes in this book that I can't even talk about all of them. Well, OK, maybe I can share some: Dex telling Jen: "And you're the shit this pig used to roll around in." Dex to Maximus: "Little lady? Who the fuck are you, John Wayne?" I have to admit I was thinking the same thing lol! The last quote I'll share is between Dex and Perry. "Baby, the first chance I get, I'm going to F&^% the shit out of you." Perry: "I think its called making love now." Dex: "Then I'm F&%^ing making love the shit out of you." HEHEHEHHEHE   ANNNDDD! I cant forget to mention our favorite book blogger being in the book!! How freakin awesome is that! Yay Maryse! The next book Ashes to Ashes will be out in the winter. I wonder if that one will be about vampires... :)

My All Time Favorites!

I think it is about time for me to make a list of my all time favorite books. These characters ALL made my book boyfriend list. I have either reread them already or am willing to reread them again. I mean I love them so much I have some sort of memorabilia, either a bracelet or pendant or something-I KNOW, how dorky. :)   I would recommend these hands down without any reservations.Well, some may come with a bit of a warning... I thought I'd organize this list in order of me reading them but I'm not sure if I can remember the order exactly.

1. The Twilight Saga: This is the series that started it all for me. Yes, it is YA. Yes, the movies are debatable as well as the actors chosen to play the characters. However, I fell in love with these books way before the movies came out. I just had to "compartmentalize" one from the other. I reread these books numerous times, maybe 5-6? New Moon was my least favorite (because Edward was gone!!).

2. The Dark Hunter Series: This series was recommended to me by a good friend for a LONG time before I actually read it. When I did, WOW, I fell in instant love with all of the Dark Hunters. This series mixes Dark Hunters, Were Hunters, and Dream Hunters. There are about 23 books in this series! I have read 19. I really hate waiting a long time for the next books to come out. Unfortunately, sometimes an author that writes a lot of books kind of becomes predictable. I don't want to feel like I'm guessing everything that is going to happen and like I have discovered their formula. I guess I kind of lost interest towards the end. However, a very good series and I have a very special place in my heart for Acheron and Talon. I reread only Acheron, (not the sad parts) 3 times.

3. The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series: This goes without saying. Even though there is romance this is a bad-ass series. There are 12 books in this series. I love all of the brothers. If I had to pick a favorite, ugh, I think it would be Wrath, John Matthew, Blay and Qhuinn... oh and poor Phury, no one likes him.  I cant choose just one! I reread this series twice and listened to the first 4 books on audio for a few times too!

4. Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy: What else can I say about this that hasn't already been said? I loved Christian before the world became obsessed with this "mommy porn."  Before the craze I already loved Christian. We have our moments, it's a love/dislike relationship now. However, we did see E.L. James in the flesh and she signed all 3 books for me! I reread this series 5 times... Dont judge me hehehe. I normally don't pick celebrity actors for my favorite characters, I've only done it once... But my Christian is definitely Channing Tatum. I mean once I read his name could possible be associated with this series, it just got stuck in me head! :)

5. The Experiment In Terror Series: This is totally out of order. This is my current favorite. Again, there is not much I can say about this series that I haven't already said. I mean, I wrote 7 blog posts about this! And I did not even review each book individually! I reread this series twice, reread the last book 3 times and I probably will reread it again. I'm kind of on a Dex & Perry binge right now. The first time you read a book (or at least when I read a book) I might go super fast because I need to see what happens. The second and third time I can savor all the details. There are 9 books so far... a few more coming out soon. Definitely an all time favorite! A warning for this series is that the first book, Dark House, can take you a little while to get into. STICK WITH IT! (yes, I used shouty capitals like Mr. Grey) You will be glad you did! I tried reading this book once and did not give it a chance. It sat...in the cloud...forever. Then I gave it a second chance and pushed through the first few chapters and BAM! Now it has become my fav!

6. The Hunger Games Trilogy:  Like the series above, it was hard for me to get through the first book. It too, sat in the cloud for a lonnnnngggg time. I saw the movie first and then was intrigued to read the books. That rarely happens for me. I like it the other way around. But, holy crow! These books are amazing! I laughed and cried. The hangover I felt after finishing this series was serious! I didn't read another book for months! Yes, it is YA. I havent reread it yet but will be in September to prepare myself for the next movie. Stick with this one too and you'll be glad you did!

7. The Existence Trilogy: Oh, Dank. I love you! This was an unexpected read for me and it was wonderful! It is YA. I pretty much love anything by Abbi Glines. She is a great author who writes really memorable stories and characters without making you feel like she is using a formula. I read this series 2 or 3 times. I too suffered a Dank hangover. I feel like this series may not get as much publicity as some of her other works, probably because it is YA, but I think it is just a great read.

Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

I recently read Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. This was a good book. It is the first book of 3. Although I mostly enjoyed this book I will not be reading the next 2 books. I know the last time I said that after a few days I went back and read the others but I don't think that will happen this time. This book is a mixture of a present day Illiad. Like some of the other books I've read, namely the Fallen Series and Fall of Angels Series, our two main characters cannot be together. Helen and Lucas are the modern day Helen of Troy and Paris. If they get together the world will be at war once again. I loved Lucas and I loved how he was so caring and protective over Helen. What I do not love is that I found myself skimming through the pages to find out more about them. Of course the book ends and they cannot be together. From what I read on amazon the next book is about her journey to (I don't really remember...to the underworld??) break the curse... hopefully so she can be with Lucas... During this time she meets another man to help her on her journey (Hades???)... Third book she must choose who she really loves. I just cant go there with these characters. I just would like to read a nice, sweet book without too much drama. Maybe I need a break from the love issues. I just want them to live happily ever after without having to go through two other books of drama. Now, some characters I do not care and will read 100 books because I love them SO much, like the Experiment in Terror Series and the Existence trilogy.  I'm not going to say don't read this book. Go ahead and see what you think. it might do it for you. Right now, for me, it didn't. I'm still on my Dex & Perry kick.

More Experiment in Terror

Yes, I'm still writing about this. I just finished rereading all of the books. I just cant get enough of Perry and Dex. If you haven't checked out my other Experiment in Terror posts, click here. You may not want to read this if you haven't read them yet. Instead of reviewing the series (I've already done that) I'm going to share who I would chose as the characters. I normally do not find celebrities who can live up to the images of the characters in my head or heart. Even as much as I love Channing Tatum, I would have never seen him as my Christian Grey, but hey, when the thought got put out there it started to make perfect sense... BUT! I think I have found celebrities for these guys. On EIT website, there are photos of a supposed Dex and Perry, but they don't do it for me, sorry. Before I post the photos and my thoughts I just have to say I love this series. I love how real Dex and Perry are. They have normal people problems. They love each other and they have issues. I feel like how many great love stories we experience, either in real life or through books, where there is always heartbreak and reunion?!? I wish there wasn't heartbreak but sometimes I think you don't fully realize what you are feeling or how strong it is until you experience some heart break. I'm sure there are many times when people don't need to feel that, I just wonder if it is as intense as those who know what it feels like to be without that other person. AND, even when Dex is trying to win Perry back, it is realistic. It is not over the top Christian Grey, where he is so overprotective and buying the whole world for her. Dex is more REAL. OK, enough of the heavy stuff. I just really love reading this series.

SOOOOOO....... Here is my Dex. I was torn between these 2 handsome guys: either Chris Pine (on the left) ( I know he has blue eyes and Dex has brown) and James Marsden. (on the right)

My Perry would be Emma Stone, just because she is qwerky (is that even the correct way to spell that!!)

Now, even though I do not like Maximus, AT ALL!! I could not help but think of David Morrisey, especially his role in The Reaping with Hilary Swank. The southern accent in that movie and the "good, southern gentleman" role he plays in that movie reminds me of Maximus to a T (wow, how old is that saying anyway lol) Yes, Maximus should be younger, hotter and have red hair, but what can I say, his speech just reminds me of this guy too much.

OK, after considering that Maximus is supposed to be hot lets try Ewan McGregor. Although he has reddish hair he is not built like a rugged cowboy (my own mental image not necessarily Karina's exact words) nor does he have a southern accent (I think he is from Scotland, like Gerard Butler)... To me Ewan is "handsomer" more handsome than David.

OK, that is all for now. Again, I will say, if you have not read this series, please do us all a favor and read it. You will be pleasantly surprised! And I will be a very happy woman to have someone else to share my Dex crush with.  :)

Experiment in Terror Series by Karina Halle

I'm in the middle of reading my third book today-yes third book. I just cant get enough of this series. I keep flipping the pages reading eagerly. Sometimes when I'm reading if there is too much description I just skim through some pages to get to the real stuff. I have BARELY done that. Even when I was waiting for Dex's return. UGH! This is the last book that is out...there are a few more coming but I hope this one doesn't end too horribly where I will be mad and waiting for the next book. This reminds me of the X-Files. I loved that show-did Scully and Molder ever get together? I cant remember. I hope Dex and Perry make it. OK, back to reading! <---  That was me yesterday, in a reading frenzy. Actually, the reading frenzy isn't over. I'm like a reading zombie. I was so wrapped up with this series that I could not even take a break to write about it. So I finished the main books, and now I am on to the novellas that are in between the books. I love Dex and Perry! I love the story line. It's totally ghost hunters meets X-Files- but better (yes there is romance). I can't even describe it. I haven't read a great series like this since The Hunger Games. The author recommends reading all the main books first then reading the short stories. I totally agree. It helps get over the Dex crush and the anxiety of waiting for more books to come. Here is the order of the books:

1. Dark house
2. Red Fox
2.5 The Benson Experiment
3. Dead Sky morning
4. Lying Season
5. On Demon Wings
5.5 Old Blood
5.7 The Dex Files
6. Into The Hollow
6.5 And With The Madness Comes Light
7. Come Alive- June 2013
7.5 Little Fifteen- Summer 2013
8. Ashes to Ashes- Winter 2013
9 Dust to Dust-Spring 2014

P.S. Do me a favor and read these so I can have someone else to talk about my Dex and Perry hang up!
P.P.S. Channing Tatum is mentioned in Lying Season (I think- I did read 3 books in one day...)- think less Magic Mike more 21 Jump Street :)

Dead Sky Morning: Experiment in Terror #3 by Karina Halle

Wow! I'm still not tired of their story! Dead Sky Morning is the 3rd installment of the Experiment in Terror Series by Karina Halle. Dex and Perry have great chemistry. I have so many questions for them:
"Don't you realize you dream about your adventures before they happen?
Don't you realize you love each other?
Don't you think he should believe you by now?"

Ugh, OK. I'm over the 20 questions. It's hard for me to review this book without giving away too much. I'm too worked up about the series not to spill the beans. AND I'm too anxious to start book #4. Dex is definitely on the book boyfriend list now.

Red Fox by Karina Halle

I just finished book 2 in the Experiment in Terror series, Red Fox, by Karina Halle. I really enjoyed this one! Perry and Dex are in for a crazy adventure in New Mexico. This adventure keeps you guessing page by page, you just don't know who to trust, who is the bad guy and who is on their side. They are called to New Mexico by an old friend of Dex's. They are supposed to be investigating a possible poltergeist haunting. If only it were that simple... Just downloaded the next book and will be starting that asap! Love this series! Would write more but cant wait to start reading Dead Sky Morning! Dex is making his way on the book boyfriend list...

Dark House: Experiment in Terror by Karina Halle

I just finished reading Dark House Experiment in Terror by Karina Halle. Very good book! I definitely recommend this book. It is actually the first in the series. This is not the normal kind of book I read. It is not about romance, dominant men, vampires, you get where I'm going with this. It is paranormal...The writing is so witty and Perry just makes me crack up at times. I'll just summarize shortly because I'd like you to read this and see if you like it for yourself. Sometimes, the less you know the better it is. Although, this book doesn't seem to have some major shocker twister like others do...unless you don't believe in ghosts... OK, Perry and Dex are exploring an old lighthouse on her uncle's property. It is said to be haunted. Perry keeps having these weird "dreams." That's all I will say for this book. I plan to start part 2, Red Fox, asap...but am torn because I really need to read Never Too Far and see what is going on with Blaire and Rush. Dex is not on the bb list -yet... I think there may be a developing romance in the next few books.... Random note, Dex is the name of my new car. Dexter, Dex for short. Dex in this book is short for Declan. What kind of name is that! Ok, my friends, do yourselves a favor and read this one will ya!
